This pendant still life of flowers is attributed to a member of the Lombard school of the second half of the 17th century, specifically to the workshop of Margherita Caffi (Cremona 1647 – Milan 1710).
In this phase, which developed mainly in Milan from the end of the 17th century onwards, the compositions were characterised by extreme freedom of execution and a departure from descriptive realism in favour of scenographic and chromatic effect.
Both works feature a lush bouquet of flowers executed with pictorial skill and rich detail, bringing together a wide range of flowers such as roses, anemones, tulips and daffodils, characterised by a vibrant luminosity and highlighted by the dark background. The painting is distinguished by an extreme freedom of brushwork, a weave of free and lively brushstrokes with a loose hand, typical of her painting style.
The painter was born in Cremona in 1647, the daughter of the French-born painter Vincenzo Volò, who was active in Lombardy in the 17th century. The family workshop was known as “dei Vicenzini” and imposed its own style from the mid-17th century to the first quarter of the 18th century, strongly influencing the taste of Milanese collectors for still life.
She then took on the artistic surname by marrying the Cremonese painter Ludovico Caffi at a young age, with whom she perhaps completed her training.
She was also active in Tuscany, where she worked and lived around the 1680s under the patronage of the Medici family, favoured by Vittoria Della Rovere, wife of Ferdinando II. Renowned and in demand throughout Europe, her clients included the Archdukes of Tyrol and the Kings of Spain.
Towards the beginning of the 18th century, she moved permanently to Milan, where she set up a flourishing workshop, playing a leading role in the development of Baroque still life in Lombardy, knowing how to renew the figurative repertoire to satisfy the tastes of late 17th-century Milanese collectors.
