Jules Georges Pascal: Charming Painting Of A Bouquet Of Flowers—violets And Roses In A Wicker Basket, 19th Century
A charming oil on panel signed “Pascal – Jules” in the lower right corner
The composition depicts a bouquet of flowers arranged around a small, overturned reddish-brown wicker basket, whose openwork structure becomes one of the central elements of the painting. Around this basket bloom several large pink roses, rendered in shades ranging from pale pink to carmine, accompanied by an abundant cluster of small mauve-blue violets—a recurring subject for this painter of still lifes and Oriental scenes, who was a native of the Toulouse region.
The roses are painted using layers of white, pink, and red, with a lighter texture in the outer petals. The blue flowers are rendered with small, quick brushstrokes of blue-gray, mauve, and white. The foliage is rendered in a more simplified style.
