Portrait, French School, 18th Century
Portrait of a Man – French School, 18th Century. Oil on canvas, oval format, in its original frame. An elegant 18th-century portrait of a gentleman, likely from the French school, depicting him in three-quarter view, dressed in the fashion of the second half of the century. The sitter wears a powdered wig with rollers, characteristic of the period, as well as a dark coat enhanced by a richly ornamented cravat or jabot, rendered with finesse. The delicately modeled face has a rosy complexion and a calm, confident expression, typical of portraits of notables or members of the enlightened bourgeoisie. The neutral, subtly shaded background highlights the subject without distracting from it. The painting is executed in oil on canvas, oval in shape, and is preserved in its original giltwood frame with a molded profile, which harmoniously highlights the composition. Condition: Antique canvas with craquelure and varnish wear, consistent with the age of the work. Minor marks and alterations are visible, without significantly affecting the legibility of the portrait. Antique stretcher with fixed keys and crossbars. An old handwritten inscription is present on the reverse, probably mentioning a date (legible as 1776 or thereabouts), reinforcing the chronological attribution. The original hanging system is preserved. The whole is authentic and has not been recently restored, offering a beautiful patina and a historical character sought after by collectors of Old Master paintings. This painting measures 69 cm x 58 cm; the canvas measures 59 cm x 49 cm.
