Antique Japanese lacquer writing box (suzuribako), Edo period, late 18th–early 19th century.

Rectangular lacquered wood box decorated in gold and coloured takamaki-e on a black ground, depicting a classical literary scene. The lid bears a gold lacquer signature reading Chōchōsai (蝶調斎), an Edo-period lacquer artist’s art name (gō). The interior is finished in nashiji lacquer.

The set is complete and includes the main inkstone box, two smaller accessory boxes, and four long implements. A refined example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, intended for use in the calligraphic arts.

Dimensions: approximately 16 × 12.8 cm.

Condition: complete set.
Wear and losses to the lacquer, particularly to the edges and corners, consistent with age and use.
The interior nashiji lacquer is preserved.
