His career began with artistic training under D.I. Karatonov, which he pursued alongside medical studies in Tomsk. A politically engaged artist from the October Revolution onward, he joined the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia in Moscow in 1922. Between 1927 and 1935, his time in France marked a turning point: sent to promote Soviet art, he established himself on the Parisian scene. Exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne, he achieved great success with his animal sculptures in bronze and ceramic. Upon his return to the USSR in 1935, he became an official figure, dedicating himself to imposing monuments and portraits of leaders. A major retrospective honored him in Moscow in 1982.
