Bronze proof based on the original plaster from 1935/40 Strongly nuanced brown patina Posthumous casting of the family by the Saint Maur Foundry around 1980/90 Signed and numbered 4/8 on the back Round stamp of the foundry on the left buttock Dimensions: Height: 33 cm Wooden base: 26.5 x 18.5 x 5 cm Biography: Lucien GIBERT (1904-1988) Lucien Gibert, born in Saint Etienne, began his artistic training in the workshop of his cabinetmaker father. He enrolled in the Beaux-Arts of his hometown then in 1921, those of Paris where he was a student of Jean Boucher. He only stayed there a short time, preferring to work independently, guided by Charles Despiau. Very influenced by Maillol, he first practiced direct carving on wood and stone. He exhibited from 1923 at the Salon des Artistes Français and at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1934, he presented a frame including six medals depicting portraits which was worth a bronze medal and a travel grant awarded by the High Council of Fine Arts, and during the year 1935, he traveled to North Africa . He received the gold medal in 1937 at the Paris International Exhibition. In 1941, he exhibited a plaster sculpture at the Salon des Artistes Français: “Algerian Dancer” and received the Vital-Cornu Prize. This same bronze model was exhibited in 1943 at the Salon des Indépendants and at that of the Société coloniale des Artistes Français (1st participation) Winner and scholarship holder of French Equatorial Africa in 1947, he traveled first to Algeria, then to Africa black and brought back sketches and photographs which inspired sculptures which further enriched his already considerable work. In 1954 he won the Algerian prize. He had already exhibited subjects of orientalist inspiration at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français.
