LIGHT CAVALRY OR NATIONAL GUARD MUSICIAN'S COLBACK, Second Empire. 33705(9276-9277) Leather body covered in bearskin, H 35 cm. Crown Ø 31 cm, covered with a scarlet cloth plume trimmed with silver braid, ending in a silver tassel with thick twisted fringes known as "spinach seeds" and a skirt of silver twisted curls. Length of the plume 48 cm, height of the tassel 8.5 cm. Interior lining of leather cut in a scalloped pattern. A gusset on the side of the body serves as a plume holder. Plume of rooster feathers (apparent height of feathers 32 cm) mounted on a whalebone base (H 39 cm). The feathers are three-colored: scarlet at the top, white in the center, and blue at the base. The tricolor wool pompom, with red at the top and blue at the bottom, measures 4 cm high and 3.5 cm in diameter. It is in excellent condition, with slight oxidation of the silver braid on the flame. The bearskin is intact, which is extremely rare for a headdress of this type. The cardboard transport box, covered in blue paper, measures 50 cm high and 39.5 cm in diameter, and has a matching lid.
