Ceremonial Mirror With Putto And Dolphins - France Or Germany - 18th Century
An important ceremonial mirror made of richly carved and molded oak.
The pediment is centered with a high-relief mascaron depicting the face of a putto (or cherub) with plump features, emerging from a stylized shell with outstretched wings.
The upper crossbar is decorated with generous garlands of fruit (grapes, pomegranates, pine cones) symbolizing abundance. The side posts, with their flowing lines, are carved with acanthus scrolls and interlocking motifs.
The lower part is distinguished by an architectural base resting on two stylized dolphins facing each other, a classic motif of Rhenish Baroque symbolism.
The mirror is surrounded by a fine interior molding decorated with a row of pearls and denticles, providing a contrast of finesse to the power of the exterior sculpture.
Structure: excellent condition and stability. Superb dark and deep patina, typical of productions from eastern France and the Rhine Valley.
Woodwork: period assembly with solid wood backing, showing traces of old tools and natural shrinkage cracks attesting to its age.
Mirror: glass replaced at a later date (decorative scalloped border), in perfect condition.
