"Bathiyari Salt Pouch - Persia. Circa 1900. 49 X 38 Cm"
Salt bags, commonly called Namakdan in Farsi and Tuzluk in Turkish, are everyday objects once used by the nomadic populations of Persia. They most often originate from productions attributed to the Lori or Bathiyari peoples. This one is Bathiyari, from the very beginning of the 20th century. There are many copies made since the 1970s, often quite poor imitations. Salt was of vital importance, both for people and for the animals that accompanied the nomads on their journeys. Salt bags are true works of art, fascinating for their precious appearance and characteristic shapes. Front in Sumak technique. Woven back. Wool on wool. Vegetable dyes. Circa 1900.
