The Japy family is a French industrial dynasty originating from Beaucourt in the Territoire de Belfort. During the Second Empire, it owned the second largest company in France, in terms of capital. Its members left their mark on the French industrial landscape through numerous innovations, particularly in watchmaking, typewriters, and pumps, but also in the organization of work and the social life of the working class in the 19th century. Édouard Louis Frédéric Japy, more simply Frédéric Japy, born on May 22, 1749, in Beaucourt and died on January 4, 1812 (at age 62) in Badevel, was a French industrialist. The founder of the Japy company, he and Armand Peugeot were instrumental in the development of modern industry and contributed significantly to the growth of the Montbéliard region.

The size and success of the factory brought Frédéric Japy renown, and his influence extended far beyond the industrial sphere. He received a bronze medal at the Exposition of Arts and Crafts in Paris in Year X (1801-1802). He was likely one of the very first people in the Belfort district to receive the Empire’s highest distinction: the Legion of Honor. His reputation and wealth made him a prominent and highly influential figure in the region.

In 1806, Frédéric Japy legally retired from the company; his three eldest sons—Fritz-Guillaume, Louis, and later Pierre—who had completed their apprenticeships at the factory, took over.

By mechanizing watchmaking with machines—which he created himself—he succeeded in concentrating all manufacturing operations in his father-in-law’s factory. He developed the “Japy housing estates,” workers’ housing complexes that provided accommodation for employees who previously worked from home.

The Frédéric Japy Museum, located in Beaucourt, is dedicated to him
