Oil on canvas, early 20th century, depicting boats on the banks of the Seine, probably near Andrésy. Signed lower left "Renefer." Renéfer, pseudonym of Jean-Constant Raymond Fontanet (1879-1957), was a French painter, illustrator, and engraver renowned for his views of Paris, the banks of the Seine, and his lively landscapes. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he developed a sensitive style inherited from Post-Impressionism, characterized by a vibrant brushstroke and a masterful use of light. An active artist who exhibited in the major Parisian Salons, he also pursued a significant career as an illustrator. Mobilized during the First World War, he left a striking artistic record of this period. His work, appreciated for its poetic perspective on urban and river life, is now sought after by collectors.
