The Work :

Narcisse Hénoque (1879-1952)
Winter Landscape on the Banks of the Seine.

Oil on panel, 23.5 x 34.5 cm (excluding frame).
Excellent condition.

Signed lower left.

The work is presented in its frame decorated with beaded and fluted friezes, typical of the period, which perfectly illuminates the cool tones of the painting. The paint layer is sound and the colors have retained all their freshness.
The frame displays an authentic patina of use that underscores its age.

This work sensitively captures a scene on the banks of the Seine (likely the Seine in the vicinity between Labouille and Duclair) under a blanket of snow.
The artist uses a subtle palette of frosty blues, pearly whites, and mauves to convey the hushed, icy atmosphere of a winter evening.
The brushstrokes are generous, almost impressionistic, lending striking depth to the bare trees and reflections in the water.
The few boats in the distance add a discreet human and industrial dimension, characteristic of the Seine Valley landscapes so dear to the artist.

The Artist :

Narcisse Henocque (Mont Saint Aignan 1879 – Rouen 1952)

Narcisse Henocque was a French Neo-Impressionist painter affiliated with the Rouen School, an artistic movement born in Normandy and renowned for its wealth of vibrant and luminous landscapes.

An heir to Impressionism, Henocque transcended classical conventions by developing a more personal and expressive approach.

His works highlight the Norman landscapes: the banks of the Seine, picturesque villages, port scenes, and the changing light of Rouen and its surroundings.

With a rich palette and structured brushstrokes, he captured the soul of these places, while imbuing them with a sensibility characteristic of Neo-Impressionism.

His preferred subjects were landscapes, riverbanks, seascapes, and snowy scenes; he also painted a few Portraits and still lifes.

A great colorist, his palette highlights his sensitivity and reveals a great harmony in his choice of colors. His paintings, often imbued with contrast and depth, continue to attract the eye of collectors and art lovers seeking authentic and characterful works.

He was a student of Zacharie at the Rouen School of Fine Arts and of Joseph Delattre at the Free Academy.

A discreet but talented artist, Narcisse Hénocque belongs to the lineage of the leading figures of the Rouen School, bringing a unique vision of Normandy. His work was largely influenced by his teacher, Joseph Delattre.

He formed, around Joseph Delattre, the Rouen Neo-Impressionist School, among whom Pierre Dumont, Narcisse Guilbert, Charles Angrand, and Charles Frechon are often mentioned. From 1907, he exhibited at the Legrip Gallery and continued throughout his career. Throughout his life, he enriched the regional artistic heritage.

Today, his work remains prized by collectors for its authenticity and its contribution to French Neo-Impressionist art.
