Spring, Autumn
Artist: Sureau
Oils on canvas depicting two pendant still lifes, one with roses and a tulip in bloom; the other with grapes, peaches, raspberries, and a squash. 54.5 cm x 65.5 cm. Signed Sureau lower right and left, on the entablatures. 19th century. (Relined) While works signed SUREAU regularly appear on the art market, information concerning the life and work of this artist is nonexistent. Is it a pseudonym? The work of a wealthy and/or socialite amateur for a circle of acquaintances? Or that of a solitary artist working "off the grid"? Several hypotheses can be put forward. In any case, his works are generally classical and realistic, very well executed, as exemplified by these two still lifes, which reveal the artist's gift for observation and the accuracy and precision of his hand.
