"Pierre Marie Poisson 1876-1953 Bronze Amphitrite On A Dolphin Valsuani Founder"
Pierre-Marie Poisson, born Auguste Marie Pierre Poisson on November 19, 1876, in Niort, and died on January 11, 1953, in Paris, was a sculptor and medalist. Bronze depicting Amphitrite on a dolphin, signed Poisson, lost-wax casting, stamped C. Valsuani and a small bronze stamp on the base, black patina with brown highlights. Amphitrite and the Dolphins. Amphitrite is a Nereid, daughter of Nereus and Doris, and wife of Poseidon, the god of the sea. She is often associated with dolphins, which are considered benevolent and protective creatures in Greek mythology. According to some legends, Amphitrite was sought after by Poseidon after he saw her dancing on the beaches of Naxos. To escape his advances, she hid, but Poseidon, as a reward for her search, placed the image of a dolphin among the stars, thus forming the constellation Delphinus (the Dolphin). Biography: Pierre-Marie Poisson studied sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1893 to 1896, where he also trained in the visual arts and plasterwork. He supplemented this training in Barrias's studio in Paris. In 1907, he received a medal of honor at the Salon des Artistes Français and a grant to reside at the Villa El-Tif in Algiers, where he designed and created the decorations. He returned there regularly until 1914. He created a bust of Marianne in a stark and imposing style, commissioned in 1932 by Jean Mistler, Under-Secretary of State for Fine Arts, to replace the official bust of Marianne by Jean Injalbert. He collaborated with other artists on the decorations for the ocean liners France in 1912, Ile-de-France in 1927, and Normandie in 1935. Symbolism of Woman and Dolphin: The dolphin is often perceived as a symbol of freedom, harmony, and protection, and is frequently associated with divine female figures. For example, Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, is often depicted with dolphins, reinforcing the idea of femininity and grace. In some cultures, the dolphin is seen as a spiritual guide, representing the feminine soul connected to nature and water, highlighting the interconnectedness between femininity and the natural elements.
