By Roger De Minevielle, 1897–1987; Original Plaster Cast
Roger de Minevielle 1897–1987
This plaster sculpture depicts a horse tied to a fence, poised to kick a fox terrier. Signed on the terrace, it rests on a base made of exotic wood. The orange-yellow shellac patina facilitates casting and enhances the original work.
Born in Sologne, Roger de Minevielle grew up surrounded by fox hunting and hound hunting, instilling in him from childhood a deep respect for nature and animals. A cavalry lieutenant in 1918, he met the animal sculptor Gaston D’illiers in 1923, who passed on his passion for sculpture to him. At the age of 25, he began sculpting. Assigned to the Cadre Noir as a stablehand, he was taken prisoner for five years until 1945. Upon his return, he was appointed chief stablehand but resigned from the army to devote himself fully to sculpture.
