"the Ring On The Finger" Carved Wooden Inkwell
A carved solid walnut inkwell, circa 1800, likely of German origin. The carving depicts a couple in love, the suitor holding his beloved's ringed hand, in the discreet presence of the priest or deacon. The ring served to seal the union between two people, a gesture that at the time had the same value as a marriage contract. A religious marriage was often preceded by a written declaration of intent (which would explain the presence of the inkwell). Dimensions: base 20 cm x 14.3 cm, height 16 cm. Condition: some cracks and fissures in the wood, later additions to the back for a pen holder, some woodworm holes. The inkwell is silver, tested and without visible hallmarks. Superb original patina, untouched, a very beautiful object intentionally left as found. Price not negotiable. Payment by check or bank transfer.
