Victorian Macintyre Porcelain Cartographic Paperweight, Western Hemisphere
A late 19th-century refined earthenware paperweight by James Macintyre & Co., dating to circa 1889 and decorated with a Western Hemisphere map credited to J.G. Bartholomew F.R.G.S. The domed surface is finely printed and enhanced with hand-applied colour.
The paperweight is made in refined earthenware, a fine ceramic body typical of James Macintyre & Co.’s late 19th-century registered decorative wares. Originally conceived as a cartographic curiosity, this paperweight reflects the Victorian enthusiasm for exploration, science, and learning.
The porcelain body is crisply modelled with incurved sides, incised ornament, and restrained red line decoration. The underside carries the blind-stamped MACINTYRE mark and the British registration number Rd. No. 141265, confirming the date and manufacture.
Combining quality porcelain production with authoritative map design, this is a distinctive and collectible desk object.
