Charming Miniature Secretary/mistress Type Piece Of Furniture, Late 19th Century (circa 1870–1900).
Charming miniature secrétaire / “maîtresse” cabinet, late 19th century (circa 1870–1900).
This refined small piece features a fall-front opening to a compartment lined with red velvet, along with two lower drawers also velvet-lined. The exterior is richly decorated with polychrome marquetry in floral and cartouche motifs, in the Napoleon III style.
Made of rosewood (palisander), it stands on turned feet and is finished with gadrooned mouldings. The knobs appear to be made of bone or another natural material.
This is a true miniature piece of furniture, intended for a boudoir, jewellery storage or small valuables — not a toy.
