The name comes from their decorative use. These figurines were frequently placed on top of pianos in bourgeois living rooms. In particular, they served to:
- to adorn the furniture;
- to dampen the vibrations of objects placed on the piano;
- to add a sentimental and childlike touch that was highly appreciated during the Victorian era.
The English term “Piano Baby” first appeared in the late 19th century.
The first models were produced around 1890–1900, mainly in Germany, which was then the world’s leading center for the manufacture of bisque dolls and figurines.
Among the most renowned manufacturers were:
- Gebrüder Heubach
- Hertwig & Co.
- Schafer & Vater
These workshops produced dolls sitting, lying down, playing with their booties, reading, or engaging in childlike activities.
