"Exquisite Pair Of Tassel Tiebacks In Mottled Wool - France Circa 1860"
Circa 1860, France. A fine pair of tassel tiebacks made of mottled wool, dating from the French Second Empire. This craftsmanship is inherited from the great tradition of the passementerie guild since the 17th century, according to the techniques described in the encyclopedia of d'Alembert and Diderot. The twisted cords are in black, cream, and mottled wool with a strong polychrome effect. The wooden balls and cones are covered with finely embroidered silk passementerie. The large tassels of mottled and braided wool are a pinnacle of handcraftsmanship. Note some pulled threads and fraying of the silk in places, without affecting the overall stability. In their original condition, as they say! Good overall condition. Suitable for immediate use as decoration or as a collector's item. Dimensions: height 75 cm, tassel height 25 cm, tassel circumference 35 cm.
