Spanish School, 17th century - Virgin of Sorrows in painted and carved wood on its original base - dimensions 55x45cm for the Virgin - 78x55cm with the base, minor signs of wear. The crown is detached. The base is the model associated with the period. All these elements are original, making it a rarity. The Mater Dolorosa is a universal term to which Christian iconography has given reference value, placing it at the center of Marian devotion. Religious art, particularly in countries of Catholic and Orthodox tradition, which give a prominent place to the Virgin Mary, is associated with the more joyful themes of the Nativity and the Virgin and Child.
