Paul Philippe (1870–1930) “the Awakening” Patinated Bronze Circa 1920–1930
Artist: Paul Philippe (1870-1930)
An elegant patinated bronze sculpture depicting a nude female figure in motion, her body stretched in a graceful pose, one arm raised behind her head and the other extended forward. This dynamic and sensual pose is characteristic of the model known as "L'Éveil" (The Awakening), attributed to Paul Philippe, a major figure in Art Deco sculpture. The slender silhouette, fluid modeling, and stylization of the female body are fully in keeping with the aesthetic developed by Paul Philippe in the 1920s, widely disseminated in bronze and spelter by leading art publishers. The treatment of the hair, the softened features of the face, and the harmonious tension of movement correspond to known versions of this model. The bronze displays a beautiful nuanced brown patina, with slight wear and age-related marks. The work is unsigned, as is frequently observed with some early editions or commercial casts of this model. Title: The Awakening Attribution: Paul Philippe Period: circa 1920–1930 (Art Deco) Material: patinated bronze Signature: unsigned Condition: good overall condition, old patina, small marks and discreet repairs visible on the arms. The base to stand the bronze upright is missing.
