Louis Sérendat De Belzim Young Woman Of The 1920s With Roses

Artist: Louis Sérendat De Belzim (1854-1933)
Oil on canvas, signed and located lower left "Sérendat de Belzim - Paris," titled by the artist on the reverse of the stretcher "Extase." Portrait of a young woman, lost in a sensory reverie, intoxicated by the fragrance of a bouquet of roses. In an intimate and romantic atmosphere, the composition is enhanced by an incandescent, amber light. Her blonde hair is adorned with a crown of flowers, echoing the roses she holds in her hands. A ray of light running along the model's neck and shoulder emphasizes her grace and highlights the brilliance of the pearls in her necklace. Note the shimmering vapor of the veil and the delicacy of the jewelry. Canvas on its keyed stretcher and its original frame of wood and gilt stucco. Canvas dimensions: 55 x 3 cm. Overall dimensions, with frame: 69 x 51.5 cm. Louis Sérendat de Belzim, born on June 26, 1854, in Port Louis, Mauritius, and died on March 25, 1933, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, was a Mauritian and French painter. He was president and co-founder of the Winter Salon and president of the Professional Union of French Painters and Sculptors. He studied under Alfred de La Hogue (1810-1886) and Lisis Le Maire. He became known as a portraitist of local dignitaries. He left for France in 1880, where he became a student of Carolus Duran and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel. He joined the Société des Artistes Indépendants as treasurer. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1887 to 1893 (including Portrait of a Woman and Young Girl Reading at the Salon des Indépendants in 1890). His Portrait of a Parisian Woman earned him a gold medal at the French exhibition in Tunis in 1887. He enjoyed great success with his solo exhibition in Paris in 1894. Sérendat de Belzim was president of the French Painters and Sculptors' Union, a Knight of the Legion of Honour, and an Officer of Public Instruction.
