Rectangular Table With Scagliola And Marble Top
Beautiful rectangular table with scagliola and marble top, and Louis XVI style base, Northern Italy, late 18th century. The artefact represents a fine example of high cabinet-making combined with the refined decorative tradition of scagliola, a technique particularly appreciated in courts and aristocratic palaces.
The scagliola top, framed by a marble band, is embellished with a rich ornamental composition of racemes, volutes, flowers and phytomorphic motifs, arranged symmetrically around a central motif, on a dark background. The lively polychromy, played on shades of red, green, blue, ivory and ocher, creates a refined chromatic contrast and a notable decorative effect.
The wooden structure, with a slab-sided perimeter band and tapered legs with a quadrangular section, recalls the neoclassical taste, with sober and balanced lines and dark wood threads and has pyramid-shaped legs.
