Great 19th-century Mythological Painting, The Chariot Of Dawn After Guido Reni
A magnificent Italian painting from the mid-19th century. Oil on canvas, first canvas, painting depicting a mythological scene of great charm and refinement. It is the iconographic prototype of the Chariot of Dawn, which Guido Reni frescoed in 1614 for the ceiling of the central hall of the Casino adjacent to the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi.
Commissioned by Cardinal Scipione Borghese, it is one of the most important works the great Bolognese painter created in Rome. The god Apollo drives the golden chariot of the sun and brings the light of the new day to earth. Aurora precedes the sun's course and chases away the darkness of night, while a winged putto, representing twilight, raises a torch. Young girls, the Hours, dance around the sun in a triumph of light.
Scenographic contemporary frame in carved, lacquered, and gilded wood, with some signs of age. This painting is ideal for elegant, classic or contemporary settings, perfect for a large reception room. The artwork has been protected by glass, thus preserving the painted surface and the extraordinary brilliance of the colors. The painting is in overall good condition. Interior dimensions: H 52.5 x W 106.5 cm.
