"Virgin In Majesty Of Velay-gévaudan – Processional Reliquary Statue"
We are offering for sale this rare statue of the Virgin in Majesty. It comes from a former private chapel in Haute-Loire, in the historic region of Velay-Gévaudan. Kept in a private setting until now, it has never been offered for sale. Current knowledge does not allow us to date the statue with absolute certainty. It is therefore offered for sale in its current condition, based on its stylistic and iconographic characteristics. It will be up to its future owner, if necessary, to commission in-depth scientific analyses to definitively confirm its date of creation. The research conducted has nevertheless revealed strong similarities with the Virgin in Majesty of Saugues, housed in the Collegiate Church of Saint-Médard (dated to the 12th century). The back of the statue is hollowed out, attesting to its function as a reliquary statue, probably in a processional context. This work is fully in keeping with the tradition of early religious sculpture. It is a rare piece, destined for collectors and enthusiasts of sacred art.
