"French School, 18th Century. After Jean-marc Nattier, Portrait Of The Duchess Of Chaulnes"
An elegant pastel depicting Anne-Josèphe Bonnier de La Mosson (1718-1787), Duchess of Chaulnes, after the famous portrait executed by Jean-Marc Nattier (1685-1766) in 1744, entitled "The Duchess of Chaulnes Represented as Hebe," now in the Louvre Museum, Department of Paintings. This period copy, made in the first half of the 19th century, illustrates the Romantic fascination with grand 18th-century female portraits and the rediscovery of Nattier, a favorite painter of the ladies of Louis XV's court. The pastel is executed on blue paper laid down on canvas, which is mounted on its original stretcher. To ensure its preservation, the work has been protected by glass. A minor, old restoration is visible in the background, without altering the subject.
