"Corner of the port of Camaret, 1937"
Oil on panel,
Signed lower left,
Titled and dated on the back by the artist: "Camaret 1937",
Charming work by the marine painter Etienne Blandin which represents a view of a corner of the port of Camaret in Finistère, bustling with its many sailing boats.
The ports painted by the artist are mostly those he visited aboard the destroyers attached to the Naval Academy, whose destinations included the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the Scandinavian and Baltic countries. On board, he filled sketchbooks and also carried cardboard sheets measuring 27 x 22 cm on which he painted with a palette knife.
Born into a family of sailors based in Cancale, Etienne Blandin was drawn to the sea from a very young age. After obtaining a position in Saint-Servan, Etienne Blandin decided to study ships and maritime history. He read, drew, and painted gouache portraits of sailing ships from different eras, and finally exhibited his creations in Brest in 1933.
His work was well-received, and he officially obtained the title of Painter of the Navy on March 30, 1934. Ancient ships, naval battles, voyages to discover distant lands, long-haul vessels rounding Cape Horn, portraits of famous sailors, and paintings documenting his cruises with the Naval Academy between 1935 and 1939: the work of Etienne Blandin, beyond its artistic qualities, is that of a connoisseur of maritime history, a scholar in constant pursuit of accuracy.
These voyages would be an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him.
Dimensions: 22 x 26.5 cm unframed and 27.5 x 32 cm with its original wooden frame.
