Vatican Reliquary Medallion, Silver Paper Filigree, 18th Century
This large reliquary medallion is made of silver and contains four relics, each with a handwritten Latin inscription identifying it. Each relic, set within an oval, is encircled by worked silver wire and paper filigree.
On the back, presented on red velvet, is the broken red wax seal, which still retains fragments of wire.
The bluish glass, likely original, protecting the seal is broken but secured. The body of the medallion is adorned with an openwork silver twist, the fixed bail is beautifully designed, and the glass frames are also decorated with a geometric frieze.
The smooth edge bears the Keys of Saint Peter hallmark of the Vatican goldsmiths' workshops.
In excellent condition, Vatican, 18th century.
Dimensions: 6.5 cm x 4.6 cm x 1.4 cm.
Weight: 33 g
