"Pair Of 19th-century Italian Marquetry Paintings In Marble And Hardstone"
An exceptional pair of polychrome marquetry panels on a black marble ground, attributed to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence. Each panel depicts a colorful bird perched on a floral bouquet, inlaid in a rich assortment of marbles and semi-precious stones (malachite, lapis lazuli, porphyry, rosso antico, bloodstone, etc.). The compositions are set within thick frames of Siena yellow marble and sealed with slate, a technique characteristic of 19th-century Florentine production. In very good condition, these rare and delightful decorative panels are a fine example of the art of pietra dura applied to wall decoration.
