Antique Two-layered Agate Cameo, Late 18th Century (circa 1770–1790)
An idealized female bust in the style of imperial effigies, rendered according to a neoclassical canon. The engraving is of very high quality, respecting the surface of the stone, with a homogeneous antique patina. The gold mount, dating from the First Empire period (circa 1805–1815), is meticulously constructed, with the cameo fully set (gold background and edge), not simply encircled. The whole is enhanced by an elegant translucent blue enameled rim, characteristic of imperial aesthetics. An identical cameo, depicting a male bust, from the same set, was published in 2015. Dimensions: height 30 mm; width 26 mm; rim thickness 3 mm. The photograph was taken in natural light without alteration. In very good condition, uncleaned, with no missing parts, the gold outline on the blue background is perfect; only the reflection obscures its perfection. The small white dots are microscopic dust.
