19th-century Vietnamese Or South Chinese Saber, Known As "dao"
This sword is a Dao, the traditional Vietnamese sword, although it is also used in southern China. It can be dated to the 19th century. This type of sword is often presented as an execution sword, but even if this particular sword could have been used for that purpose, which is quite possible, it is not the only use for these swords.
BLADE : This is the traditional Dao blade, found in Vietnam and also throughout southern China. It is extremely sharp, except for the first 15 centimeters near the guard. It widens towards the point, which has a circular hole in which a copper cross is set. This hole was used during training to attach a kind of textile ribbon to better visualize the movement.
A design that appears to represent a stylized butterfly is engraved on each side of the blade. Blade length 60.8 cm Thickness at the ricasso 3.5 mm
GUARD : Oxidized iron, octagonal 6 cm x 4 cm
GRIP : Made of wood, covered with an intricate braid of red lacquered cord, beautifully patinated, in perfect condition. The handle ends with a ring that was used to attach a scarf wrapped around the left hand for a secure grip. This handle is substantial, approximately 4 cm in diameter, due to the special braiding which increases its volume and ensures a firm hold. This type of hilt must certainly have been suited to a user of impressive stature. It is rare for the braiding of grips to have been preserved in such good condition.
Typical of traditional 19th-century Indochinese weaponry. The unusual type of braiding is obviously a plus.
Shipping costs: France €30, Europe €40
