Strong Left-handed Dagger, Spain, Late 16th Century
This large left-handed dagger showsan impression of efficiency. Based on itstype of blade, the style of its guard, and its dimensions, it can be dated to the last quarter of the 16th century. It is probably fromSpanish origin. The very wide quillons are well-suited to the style of fencing that uses the left-handed dagger to deflect the opponent's rapier blade, and the very strong ricasso is designed to withstand the impact of a sharp blade.
BLADE: It is a strong, thick, yet elegant blade. After a solid 2.5 cm ricasso, it has a double-edged hexagonal cross-section. On each face, there are three deep fullers, which are decorated with numerous small-diameter holes. This technique, known as "reperting," is clearly intentional, it was a very fashionable decoration during the second half of the 16th century.
Blade length = 25.7 cm, Width at the ricasso = 2.3 cm, Thickness at the ricasso = 8 mm.
GUARD : It features two quillons strongly curved towards the blade, with gadrooned decoration. In the center of the crossguard, there is a large ring (4.9 cm in outer diameter), designed to effectively protect the hand. The interesting feature of this ring is the beautiful pierced iron decoration that covers its entire interior. This characteristic is rarely seen.
POMMEL : It is a six-sided pommel, tapering towards the tip. It is surmounted by a small button to which the tang of the blade is riveted.
GRIP: It is covered with a double twisted iron wire in a chevron pattern, alternating with a smooth white metal wire (probably silver). The braided iron wire ferrules, known as "Turk's heads," are present and in good condition.
This beautiful dagger was clearly designed for combat. It is very different from a court dagger and evokes street fights in the shadowy alleyways of Seville at the end of the 16th century, during the reign of Philip II…
