Half Samurai Mempo Mask - Edo Period (1603-1868).
JAPAN - Edo Period (1603-1868). Half-mask of a samurai known as a "Mempo," made of wrought iron with a brown lacquer finish (very minor losses). Features a pronounced chin, a movable nose, white horsehair mustaches, upper and lower lips outlined with cinnabar lacquer, visible and gilded teeth, pierced nostrils, and sweat holes under the chin. The interior is lacquered red (the color red was meant to inspire courage and conceal blood). The five-tiered "Yodare-kake" (throat-head) is alternately lacquered brown and gold and braided with yellow silk; the reverse is identical. The side attachments are pierced for the cord used to secure it to the kabuto (helmet). Dimensions: 26 x 19 x 13 cm. Dimensions with stand: 41 x 19 x 17 cm.
