This patinated bronze box is a trompe‑l’œil in the shape of a book. It is signed by Max Le Verrier, who created several pieces of this type.
The book probably celebrates the union of Louis XII and Anne of Brittany. The cover bears the arms of Brittany — the five full ermines — with the inscription Anne, and those of her husband Louis XII, marked Louis. One can also see the porcupine, symbol of Louis XII, and the ermine, symbol of Anne of Brittany.
Both a sculptor and an editor, Max Le Verrier (1891–1973) succeeded in weaving a precious link between history, artistic craftsmanship, and interior decoration, with ingenuity and sensitivity. A true figure of the Art Deco movement, Max Le Verrier left behind an invaluable artistic legacy. Created mostly in the 1920s–1930s, his works embody French refinement and remain strikingly modern.
