The Antique Dog Portrait Paintings category presents an oil on canvas depicting two dogs portrayed with remarkable realism,
created by the painter Herman Courtens, renowned for his animalier scenes between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The composition features two companion dogs resting: one with a light, soft, fluffy coat in the foreground, likely a Maltese or Bolognese,
and another with darker fur in the background, possibly a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
The artist’s rich, textured, and vibrant brushwork enhances the fur’s texture and the animals’ expressive presence.
The scene is intimate and refined, characterized by warm, neutral tones that lend depth and harmony to the composition,
making this painting a fine example of European animalier art, highly sought after by collectors of antique animal subject paintings.
The antique painting is signed lower left Herman Courtens, a Belgian impressionist painter active mainly during the first half of the 20th century.
Herman Courtens (1884–1956) studied painting under his father and was also a pupil of Isidore Verheyden, an important Belgian artist.
He attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
His work reflects realist and impressionist influences, with particular attention to color and brushwork. He later served as a professor at the
École des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp.Courtens regularly exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Many of his works are housed in Belgian museums, including Antwerp, Bruges, and Valenciennes.
The artwork is housed in an original gilded frame, contemporary with the painting, in Art Deco / Art Nouveau style.
Both the antique oil painting and the frame have undergone careful and professional restoration.
