Louis XVI Style Breakfront Mahogany, Marquetry And Gilt Bronze Vitrine With A Wedgwood
A fine Louis XVI style breakfront vitrine in solid mahogany and mahogany veneer, enhanced with kingwood and tulipwood marquetry and rich chased gilt bronze mounts, made in the late 19th century.
The upper part opens at the front with a glazed door framed by a beaded gilt bronze moulding with an arched lower edge; two fixed canted glazed sides extend the view of the objects on display. The interior is fitted with two glass shelves.
The lower part is veneered with panels of dotted trellis marquetry framed by beaded mouldings. At the centre, an oval blue Wedgwood jasperware medallion shows in white relief the Allegory of Agriculture: a draped young woman holding a sickle and a sheaf of wheat. It is set within a beaded border and topped with a gilt bronze acanthus scroll.
The cornice carries a central gilt bronze frieze of foliate scrolls between pierced friezes, with rosettes at the corners. An acanthus motif decorates the apron. The vitrine stands on six toupie feet shod in gilt bronze.
