"Ngbaka Mask, Drc 01"
This mask features almond-shaped eyes set within two large concave circles. A recessed arc also highlights the base of the nose. The rectangular mouth is open, revealing rows of teeth made from small wooden slats. The pointed chin completes the lower part of the face, while the upper part of the mask is marked by a large, domed forehead that lends power to the face. This mask is very interesting from a construction standpoint. Indeed, the sculptor played with concave and convex shapes, as well as with large circles that emphasize the eyes and simultaneously define the nose.
This type of mask was used during initiation rites.
