Turned Boxwood Needle Case "pierre De St François De Sales" - Paris 19th Century
Elegant turned boxwood needle case - 19th century (circa 1860-1870) in the Napoleon III style. A curiosity and piece of folk art, this turned boxwood needle case is a rare example of mid-19th-century craftsmanship. It features a very clear lithographed woodcut label depicting the portrait of Saint Francis de Sales, patron saint of writers and journalists (due to his use of printing). The period markings read: "PIERRE DE ST FRANÇOIS DE SALLES" "QUALITÉ SUPERIEURE" "RUE DU MONTPARNASSE - PARIS" "LAPAQUELLERIE". The turning work is remarkable, with a finely molded baluster base, characteristic of the skill of turners of this period. The boxwood has a deep and warm honey-colored patina, and the iconography and text are perfectly preserved and very legible despite a few minor losses. In beautiful condition with a superb patina.
