Wax Baby Jesus Under Glass Globe, 19th Century
Devotional object representing a wax baby Jesus, presented under its original blown glass globe, resting on a blackened wooden base.
The child is finely modelled and adopts the traditional gesture of blessing with his right hand. The head, hands and lower legs are made of wax; the head is embellished with added hair.
The Baby Jesus is placed in a particularly carefully crafted naturalistic setting: the ground depicts a plant landscape composed of moss, artificial flowers, painted elements and shells. He is accompanied by a symbolic lamb made of composite material, whose head is also made of wax. At the back, a stylised tree rises up and contributes to the pastoral and spiritual setting of the whole scene.
This wax Jesus is dressed in an ivory silk robe, embellished with lace and gold braid, in accordance with the tradition of liturgical vestments.
This type of composition, combining wax sculpture, textiles and decoration under a globe, is in keeping with the tradition of late 19th-century domestic devotional objects intended for private worship.
Height 63 cm – Diameter 36.5 cm / 37 cm.
Condition: fabric of the robe torn in places at the front. Otherwise, everything is in very good condition: no cracks, no breaks, nothing has melted.
