A Rare Mountain Cupboard
A rare mountain cupboard from the Pyrenees
Pieces like this were crafted in rural areas during the winter months. When seasonal farm work came to a halt, farmers used materials from their own land to make tools and furniture. These techniques were passed down from generation to generation.
With limited means, the oldest traditions of furniture making—dating back to medieval times—remained alive. Solid wooden planks were joined using dovetail construction and reinforced with hand-forged nails, resulting in remarkably pure and honest forms. Although functionality was essential, these pieces are almost always beautifully proportioned. In this case especially, the maker clearly went a step further, embellishing the cupboard simply because he could.
