Oil on cardboard, signed lower left by Edmée Schmittel Nicaise (Charleville). Schmittel was an artist from the Ardennes region, born in 1917 and died in 2013. She studied under the Ardennes artist Marguerite Sarrazin, then in Paris at the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière with Othon Friesz. The painting is annotated on the back: "La 'Pouncho' (old port) Saint-Tropez Monsieur Vamy Joseph. Oil on cardboard, sketch paper, canvas grain number 36." Artistic Union. Prize won on June 16, 1950. La Ponche / "La Pouncho" is a legendary district of Saint-Tropez frequented by Jean Cocteau, Picasso, Colette, Brigitte Bardot, Christian Vadim, Françoise Sagan… Bernard and Annabelle Buffet, and Romy Schneider.
