Great War Halberd Guan Dao Indochina 19th
This large war halberd originates from Indochina. It was collected in the 19th century by a French Officer. The shaft has been shortened for an exhibition, but since the cut is at an angle, it would be very easy to glue it back to its original length using a simple curtain rod, for example. The large and very thick blade is clearly intended for use in warfare and not simply as a palace guard weapon.
BLADE : It is single-edged and curved. The thickness is considerable at the ricasso, gradually tapering to a point. The back of the blade curves upwards to form an angle, then resumes a concave curve towards the tip. The back edge of the blade initially has three facets up to the afore mentioned angle, then two facets. This type of profile is known in China as one of the variants of Guan Dao, or "General Guan's halberd."
Blade length = 52 cm, width at the ricasso = 2.7 cm, width at the widest point = 5 cm, thickness at the ricasso = 1.5 cm.
SHAFT : The first 25 cm of the shaft are covered with a brass socket, reinforced by 8 rings of the same metal. There is a small chip (a stable crack) in the brass sheet between the 3rd and 4th rings. This socket ends with a section cut and chiseled with a floral design. The wood is a very hard, dark wood, probably ironwood.
A beautiful object steeped in history.
