Japanese Carved Keyaki Wood Lotus Tray, Meiji Period
A sculptural Japanese carved wooden tray dating from the Meiji period. The design consists of a large rectangular tray with a smaller raised oval tray above, connected by a carved handle formed as intertwined lotus stems.
The surfaces are decorated with deeply carved lotus leaves, stems and seed pods, including pierced floral details to the upper tray. The carving shows good depth and rhythm, giving the piece a strong organic presence.
Made from solid keyaki hardwood, the tray has warm red-brown tones and a natural patina developed over time. The lotus motif symbolises purity and enlightenment in Japanese culture, reinforcing the tray’s decorative and symbolic appeal.
