Hippolyte FOURNIER (1853-1926) attributed to Louise Oil on canvas unsigned 61x50cm 76x50cm framed Provenance: Angers, Encheres Pays de Loire, sale of 11/12/2019 Provenance: descendants of the artist Trained by Eugène Brunclair (1832-1918) in Angers then moved to Paris, Hippolyte Fournier entered the Académie Julian, there met his future friend Henri Martin (painter) and, in 1879 became the student of Jean-Paul Laurens. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1881, showing portraits, history paintings, genre scenes inspired by Anjou, and landscapes, before adopting around 1890 a style marked by symbolism, expressing, among other things, an attachment to Christian figures—see *La Foi* (Faith), a painting in the church of Saint-Aubin in Chambellay, or *Procession of Corpus Christi at Gonnord* in the church of Saint-Pierre in Valanjou. These last two paintings, along with *Rêverie* (Reverie), are each listed as a historical monument. He also produced nudes inspired by his female models. He became a member of the Salon society.
