Ewer And Basin, Chased Copper, 19th Century, Ottoman Empire, Very Good Collector's Condition
A large ewer called an "Ibriq" resting on its complete basin with soap dish.
Total height: 58 cm.
Originating from Turkey, Ottoman Empire, 19th century, and in superb condition.
Our red copper model has a bulbous body decorated with gadroons and a wide brass handle.
The basin is richly decorated with foliage, is tinned on the inside, and has its grid and soap dish which holds the base of the ibriq. Ibrīq, or also Ibrik (إبريق) in Arabic, often refers to a jug with a handle.
During Islamic ritual ablutions before prayer, water taken from the ibriq is poured over the hands and collected in a basin.
## "The festival of the initiates, standing ready to serve,
the beauties from all sides hold the ewer in their hands,
the lovers wash their hands with all their soul,
while the beauties pour the water, the ewer to "The hand"
Reading and translation, AS Melikian-Chirvani, 1973 p 119.
19th century, very good condition, collector's item. Simple water jugs were often made of clay, while water jugs in Eastern courtyards for prayer were often very elegantly decorated copper jugs.
