FRENCH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1800–1820
Young man lighting his pipe by candlelight
Oil on panel, trace of a signature at middle right
47 × 36.5 cm / 18.5 × 14.4 in
With frame: 62 × 53 cm / 24.4 × 20.9 in
(split in the panel, reinforced)
This painting, executed in France at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, depicts a young man lighting his pipe by the flame of a candle, in an intimate and concentrated nocturnal atmosphere. The strong chiaroscuro, the warm candlelight modelling the face and the folds of the costume, as well as the attention given to surface effects, link the work to the tradition of the “nocturnal genre” inherited from Dutch and Flemish masters, which was then particularly fashionable and highly popular in French painting around 1800–1820.
