Sold with invoice/certificate. A museum piece! Louis-Augustin Auguin (1824–1903) is a major figure in 19th-century French landscape painting and one of the most important representatives of the Bordeaux school of landscape painting. Trained in Paris, he was influenced by the teaching and style of Camille Corot, whose taste for plein air painting and pursuit of a true atmosphere rather than academic rendering he shared. Auguin fully participated in the renewal of naturalistic landscape painting in the second half of the century. He painted alongside Corot and Gustave Courbet, notably during the Port-Berteau campaigns, embracing a realist movement attentive to nature observed en plein air. He exhibited regularly at the Salon and in major Bordeaux exhibitions, and his work is now held in several public collections, particularly in Bordeaux. The painting presented here is a prime example of Louis-Augustin Auguin's mature period and convincingly illustrates the essential characteristics of his art: a structured yet natural composition, a free brushstroke, attention to light and atmosphere, and a rejection of any anecdotal effect. With its balanced format, signature, quality of execution, and period Barbizon frame, this work is a representative and accomplished example of landscape painting as practiced by Auguin, at the crossroads of Barbizon influence and regional Bordeaux naturalism. It thus offers an aesthetic, historical and decorative interest, perfectly in line with the place occupied by the artist in the history of the 19th century French landscape.
