This sizable vase is unique in that it is made using scagliola, an ancient technique that employs a very fine type of plaster made from "moonstone" mixed with pigment to imitate the texture of hard stones or precious marbles. In this case, the appearance of green Alpine marble is rendered with impressive realism. The vase is decorated with gilt bronze mounts, the most striking feature of which is the presence of two goat heads on the sides. Three-dimensional decorative objects made using scagliola are relatively rare. This technique was primarily used to create imitations of marble in the form of panels and columns, often for altars. HD photos are available.
