A remarkable pair of mercury-gilt bronze candlesticks, finely chased and guillochéd; they rest on elegant pedestals adorned with generous acanthus leaf swags and an ornate border. The understated central body, with its beautiful and delicate guilloché work, hints at the Empire style. The body is tapered and flared at the base with a charming frieze. Above the bobeche, a plume-like collar echoes the base. The bobeches are beautifully guillochéd and have their cups (a slight, insignificant difference). This lovely pair is of high quality and very elegant in the Neoclassical style, a rare example of the late 18th-century Directoire period. They are in good condition with vibrant gilding.
